bed bug feeding

The bed bug in this photo was caught in the act of feeding, the pinkish surface in the background is human skin. This individual is about 1/4" in length, notice the reddish-brown coloration, absence of wings, six legs, two antennae, prominent eyes, and segmented (striped) abdomen.

A short "beak" can be seen arising from between the eyes and extending to the skin surface (beside the thin, dark hair). The beak is a hollow tube that holds the mouth-parts which pierce the skin and allow the bed bug to draw blood from its host.
