Bugs That Bite: bed bugs -- bird mites -- biting midges -- black flies -- chigger mites -- fleas -- lice -- mosquitoes -- scabies mites -- ticks [<= you are here]

Ticks are small to medium size blood-feeding mites. All stages except eggs feed on blood and in fact most stages require a blood meal in order to pass to the next stage in development. Ticks physically attach to their host and actual feeding can take many minutes to several hours. Ticks can transmit a number of serious diseases while feeding so prompt removal is extremely important.

Ticks look somewhat like spiders but ticks have no constriction between the "head" and abdomen as is found in spiders.
