chigger mite

Chigger mites are tiny biting mites that normally occur outdoors in dry, brushy areas. Bites result in red, swollen and intensely itchy lesions. Chigger mites do not normally occur indoors and do not infest homes. Insect repellents are somewhat effective protection against bites.

Chigger mites can be yellow to red in color, they have six legs that are covered with hairs (setae). These tiny mites are actually the larval stage of a much larger predator mite that lives in the soil.
