Fleas are small, biting, ectoparasitic insects that infest animals such as dogs and cats but fleas will bite people as well. Bites result in red, swollen, itchy lesions. Because fleas are found on the floor bites often appear first on lower legs and ankles.

Fleas are reddish-brown in color, lack wings and the flea's body is compressed side to side. They jump when disturbed. Flea larvae on the other hand are yellowish-white, worm-like and live in the pet's bedding, see the article below for a picture of the flea larva.
