Female mosquitoes bite to obtain the blood that is needed to produce healthy eggs. While biting mosquitoes can infect their host with a variety of serious diseases including malaria, dengue, west Nile and yellow fever. These diseases have had a profound impact on human history.

Mosquito bites are more common outdoors but some mosquito species readily enter homes as well. Bites can can be avoided by controlling mosquito larvae, using insect repellents, bed nets, window screens and by trapping adult mosquitoes.
