Termidor
Insecticide for termites and carpenter ants
Termidor (tm) is a relatively new insecticide with the active
ingredient fipronil. There are a number of active labels for
fipronil-based insecticides currently sold in the US including flea medications,
a commercial agricultural insecticide called Regent, and of course
Termidor for pests that damage structures like termites and carpenter
ants.
Termidor SC (the SC stands for soluble
concentrate) is labeled for use against termites, in pre- and
post-construction applications, carpenter ants as an exterior perimeter
treatment and for nuisance ants (exterior only). The smallest
package size of Termidor SC is 20 oz (right) which makes 24 gallons of working
solution at the lowest label rate. You will also need a good quality 1 gallon
garden sprayer to apply the working solution for perimeter and spot treatments.
common misspelling: fipronyl

Termidor
Insecticide has a so-called "delayed effect"
Termidor is a slow-acting insecticide and this
"delayed-effect" allows insects like termites and ants, which live in colonies,
time to carry some of the insecticide back to the nest where it contaminates the
whole colony. This is why Termidor works well for carpenter ants as a
foundation or perimeter spray because workers pick up the insecticide as they
travel back and forth from the nest and thus contaminate, and potentially kill,
the whole colony.
While perimeter treatments for carpenter ants can be done by
homeowners with the proper application and safety equipment (see specimen
label for instructions, specimen and full pesticide labels are available from suppliers),
Termidor treatments for termites generally require equipment and expertise
beyond that available to most homeowners.

The
pesticide label and the specimen label
A pesticide label is the official "instruction sheet"
for the product and contains all of the information required for registration in
the US, as well as instructions for its use. A specimen label
is exactly the same as an official label except that a specimen label is not
attached to an actual product container. Use specimen labels for
general information only, always follow instructions that come with the
product you are actually using.
